Chivas USA hires Martin Vasquez as coach Former assistant coach with the club replaces Preki, who left after the season by mutual agreement with team. By Mark Medina December 3, 2009 Martin Vasquez imagined many times his aspiration to become coach of Chivas USA. He shared that dream two years ago with Shawn Hunter, the team’s president and chief executive, and with Antonio Cue, the team’s part-owner. He did it shortly after becoming an assistant coach with Bayern Munich. “The very last thing I said to him,” Hunter said, “was it would be an honor for me to introduce you as the head coach at Chivas USA.” That finally happened Wednesday when Vasquez, 45, was hired as the club’s fifth head coach. Vasquez replaces Preki, who guided Chivas USA to three playoff appearances but couldn’t advance beyond the first round and left by mutual agreement with the club. “Getting this opportunity was a goal and at one time was a dream,” said Vasquez, who was a Chivas USA assistant from 2005 to 2007. With the departure of former coach Preki, the Goats organization didn’t have to look far for a replacement as Vasquez was also a Goats assistant coach from 2005-2007. “I am honored to return to Chivas USA as the club’s new Head Coach,” said Coach Vásquez.. “I was a part of this team at the very beginning, and have seen it make great strides in the last few years”. Vásquez is well traveled in the realm of American Soccer. Before his first stint with the Goats, he was an assistant down the hall with the Galaxy. Before that he coached Womens Soccer in the defunct WUSA (Womens United Soccer Association) from 2001-2002. Not only did he play collegiately at Cal State LA in the early 80’s, he also coached collegiately at Cal Poly Pomona from 1999-2000.
