When you put your oven into “Self-Cleaning” mode the oven will heat to 900 deg. F… much hotter than the normal 350-400 deg F you normally cook at. This is dangerous… if you were to open the door like you do when you are checking the oven to see if your cookies are done the burst of hot air (hot air rises) would burn you leaving you without eyebrows, and hair that looks like Harpo Marx (at a minimum). The temperature of burning paper is 451 deg F. It could also burn your lungs… this is why the ovens are designed to lock during this cleaning cycle (open at 600 deg F or less). Carbon in the oven is coverted carbon dioxide and possibly carbon monoxide and vented. Also carbon dioxide is heavier than air so will flow along the floor as it is vented and cools. It is possible that if you have a sleeping kittens/cats and enough carbon in your oven your cat could be a problem for them but the real problem comes from the toxic fumes that may be given off from a new oven the first couple of
