Is it true Nikon digital cameras are not good in taking night shots?
Most compact digicams – not just the Nikon Coolpix P90 – don’t do well in low light situations. There are a couple of reasons for this – a tiny sensor which does poorly with higher ISO settings associated with low light photography and a slow lens which requires higher ISO settings in low light. The P90 isn’t too bad with an f2.8 lens at its wide setting but when you zoom out it becomes an f5 and that’s really slow. A camera you might want to consider is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 which has an f2 lens which is one stop faster then the P90 lens. This could be the difference in using ISO 800 at f2 vs using ISO 1600 at f2.8. The f-stop loss on the LX3 is from f2 to f2.8. Of course, your brother might have been thnking about the poor flash performance of compact digicams.
