Is it true, as Kirschner said on the VH1 “Behind the Music” special, that everything after his ousting as musical director failed, miserably?
Not unless a number one, triple platinum album is considered a miserable failure! HeadQuarters was number one for one week, then the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album knocked it to number two, where it remained through the summer. Second only to Sgt. Pepper is pretty impressive for ANY band! Considering that Sgt. Pepper is/was one of the best albums of all time, that Colgems did not provide a fraction of the promotion it had for previous releases and that no single or radio cut was released in the US, the Monkees held their own QUITE well. Pisces Aquarius Capricorn and Jones LTD, the second album without Kirschner, also reached number one, where it remained for five weeks. This album spawned two hit singles and also went triple platinum. The Birds, The Bees and the Monkees charted at number three, going single platinum and spawning two platinum singles, one of which, Daydream Believer, hit number one. It was after this that interest in the Monkees albums waned, partly due to lack of promotion
