Is it too late to start growing tomatoes from seed in the U.K?

This is a good time to start, you can get them going indoors and put them out in the greenhouse before they get too leggy on a windowsill. Use one separate 3- inch pot for each seed you intend to plant (most packets have about 6 seeds in, if you buy F1 seeds, but probably you don’t need more than about 6 plants + a couple of spares.) Put about 1inch of multipurpose compost in the bottom of each pot, and water it, letting it drain. Put one seed on top of this and cover with a tiny bit of compost. Cover the pots, either with plastic or with the cut-off end of a clear plastic bottle, and put them on your warm windowsill, preferably in a windowsill propagator. Germination will take between 3 and 10 days, depending on temperature. As soon as each one germinates, remove the plastic cover. When each one has grown an inch of stalk, gently pour extra compost round the stalk up to the pair of leaves at the top. When the stalk gets right up the top, do this again, so only the seed leaves are show
