Is it time to acknowledge that Juan Pierre is, in fact, whats wrong with fantasy baseball?
Pierre steals a lot of bases, scores a bunch of runs, and hits for a good average. That makes him pretty valuable in fantasy leagues. Unfortunately, in “real baseball,” he hasn’t put together an above-average adjusted OPS since ’04, and even then he was barely above average. Now that the Dodgers have given the starting LF job to Andre Ethier (not big on steals, but less likely to make an out in a given plate appearance), Pierre becomes NL-only steals fodder. Maybe we, as Roto owners, should follow the Dodgers’ lead and focus on what actually helps win ballgames. 3. The 2008 San Francisco Giants: What’s the point? There’s not a lot to love outside of the two-headed monster of Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum. Don’t undersell Barry Zito — he won’t pitch up to his contract, but he’s a solid NL-only No. 3. Even with a losing record and a 4.53 ERA, he was the 30th most valuable pitcher in the NL. With a career 3.67 ERA, it’s safe to expect Zito to rebound. The Giants do have some steals potenti
