Is it time for independence for puerto rico?
The issue of independence and statehood come up with Puerto Rico periodically. They are both hot issues with their respective local supporters. I bought a book on the history of Puerto Rico many years ago when I was visiting. They have a fascinating history, and they just missed statehood due to hispanic prejudice in her earlier days as a territory. There are many advantages and disadvantages to remaining as they are or becoming a state. Either way they get lots of support from the United States for either status. But statehood carries additional legal stipulations and obligations they are not required to meet as a territory. It’s a little involved to cover here. I’m sure there are a few good websites which cover this issue, if you google it. If I could find that book I mentioned, wherever I’ve packed it away, I would list it here.
