Is it still necessary to use web only colors in web design?

For site layout and graphics you can safely assume that all users have SVGA monitors supporting “millions” of colors. Howere, is still best to use web safe colors for body text. At small font sizes, the web safe colors will render crisper, more legible letters. Another place to still consider web safe colors is in fades or bleeds where a logo, banner or other non-transparent image smoothly blends with a solid background color. A last consideration: Although the iPhone and similar devices are becoming more common, the majority of web-capable mobile devices have very limited graphic interfaces. If you must use non-web safe colors on your main site, please consider using web safe colors in a custom style sheet for handheld devices. Hope this helps, Fred R.
