Shouldn’t be a problem. [posted 11/13/1999] Question: I just learned I was pregnant. Within a day or two of probable conception, I developed a rash. I was prescribed prednisone. I took 20mg 3 times a day for 3 days (60mg/day), 20 mg 2 times a day for 3 days (40 mg/day, 10mg 2 times a day for 3 days (20mg/day) and 10mg for 1 day. I was wondering what effects the drug can have on a fetus at this early stage (first two weeks). I saw your posting regarding smaller dosages of prednisone during pregnancy, but I didn’t know if the answer was the same — and exactly what “little” in “little problem” meant. Thank you in advance!! Answer: I doubt you will have a problem. The problem with steroids is thought to be adrenal suppression of the fetal adrenal glands. The glands do not develop until about 3-4 months and it takes a while to achieve the problem. Taking them early would be of little risk.
