Technically freezing preserves food indefinitely. It will be safe to eat if it has been frozen the entire time. The problem is that freezer burn degrades the quality and taste of the food after about 6 months. To keep food from freezer burn longer, you can remove the air from the package by using a FoodSavr or similar tool that creates a vacuum.
