Is it safe to drive over the Bering Strait Bridge during heavy winds?
A Bering Strait crossing is a hypothesized bridge or tunnel spanning the Bering Strait between Cape Dezhnev, Chukotka, Russia, and Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska, United States. The bridge or tunnel would provide an overland connection linking Asia, Africa and Europe with North America and South America. The Bering Strait could be spanned by a series of three bridges via the Diomede Islands for a total distance of about 80 km (50 miles). The two long bridges would each be slightly longer in length than the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, currently the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world. The construction of such a bridge or tunnel would face unprecedented engineering, political, and financial challenges, and to date, no government has authorized the start of any planning or construction. There have been several proposals made by various persons, TV-channels, magazines etc. The names used for such bridges have included The Intercontinental Peace Bridge and Eurasia-America Transport Link. Coastal Flood Warnings The National Weather Service Fairbanks office has issued coastal flood warnings for the areas in western Alaska as described below: • Coastal flooding continues along the Chukchi Sea coast from Cape Krusenstern northward. The coastal flood danger will continue this morning, with some improvement expected by Wednesday afternoon. The warned area includes the village of Kivalina. Southeast winds gusting to 30 mph continue to pile up seas to 10 feet. Wind speeds will drop by late afternoon with seas subsiding to 7 feet by evening. As the storm responsible for the coastal flooding weakens over the Russian far east, the storm surge will be reduced as well. • Coastal flooding threat continues today in Norton Sound. Southwest winds to 30 mph, gusting to 40 mph, with 7 foot seas in Norton Sound will continue to threaten coastal points with flooding. Winds will decrease gradually late this afternoon and seas will subside this evening to ease the coastal flooding threat. •
