Is it right to keep animals in a zoo?

I believe that our (us humans) role with regard to animals is stewardship – in otherwords, we use them wisely and take of them. That comes from my belief in the word written in the Bible in Genesis and elsewhere. That being said, I think most zoos don’t follow this stewardship role very closely. The animals are on display, out of what is natural for them. In some cases, where humans have not followed their role as stewards in the wild and have endangered an animal, a zoo environment is the only way for us to save the animal, so I applaud that method. I understand the need to fund such work as well, and if the protection of a few species that are endangered is the goal and the use of a few animals whose species are not endangered to draw in paying customers that will pay for the saving of the endangered species is what is needed, I am for that as well. But I don’t think we need zoos as they exist in every village and town. Some are ok. One I admire: http://columbuszoo.
