In general, the county jails aren’t all that dangerous – those in large urban areas (Los Angeles, etc…) will probably be more dangerous than other rural counties – partly because of the total population, and partly due to the inmate’s crimes. Sierra County or Kern County will be different than San Francisco County or Humboldt County – which will be different than Shasta, Inyo or Alameda Counties. Is it really dangerous? I’ve spent 20 years in my department, and have spent probably 5 years working in them as a deputy and have NEVER had a problem. Much of it comes down to treating the inmates consistently and with respect (ie, please, thank you – being professional on a consistent basis goes a LONG way). In doing so, it’ll help in the inmates giving you respect, knowing that you’re being fair. Obviously, you always have to have situational awareness and know what’s going on at all times.
