Is it possible to switch service in military branches before the end of a contract?

I’ve heard of this being done but I have never seen it first hand and I only heard about it before 9/11. If you weren’t in the Army I would say you have a shot at getting transferred to another service but being in the Army right now it is hard enough to just plain get out. The only kind of early release I know about is if you get accepted to some sort of a commissioning program like Warrant or OCS and that is not really a release but they kill your enlisted contract. Once your active duty obligation or active reserve obligation is up and you are in your IRR phase you can switch to the Navy and they will “buy out” your contract but until then you are kind of screwed. The Army spent a lot of money training you and they are not going to just hand you over to the Navy. If you still feel like pushing this you can talk to your chain of command and I am sure they can work something out but you are seriously fighting an uphill battle with the fact that the Navy is trying to seperate people ri
