Without the pro CD it is a bit more complicated, but there are some things that you can do. If you are using Internet Explorer 6, open control panel, add/remove programs. IE 6 will be in the installed program list, select it and select repair. I don’t recommend using the “reset to original configuration”, option just select repair. Again in control panel, select administrative tools. Open the event viewer. Look for errors that are reported each time you boot the system. They have event ID numbers and repair instructions can be found by searching google. Press at boot up and select the option to write a boot log on startup. This log file is pretty big but it reports either success or failure of everything that the system loads. It takes time to fix it this way, but if you willing to spend the time, the information on how to repair the system is easy to find.

It sounds like you are having a problem with IE. You may not need to attempt to repair XP. What you should do is boot-up in safe mode (Press F8 before Windows banner). Run anti-virus to check for viruses. If no viruses and you are still having problems with IE. Download the full IE7 version from Microsoft and perform a clean install. Good Luck Mate!
