This is really what happens on earth naturally over time, the CO2 content of the air is controlled by the formation or dissolution of calcite from sea water. Sea water (or any water really) can take up a certain amount of CO2, but in doing so acidifies the water (CO2 plus water forms carbonic acid, a weak acid). Normally, the acid is then buffered by the disolution of calcite (which is a base salt). The system normally fairly rapidly reaches the point where it is filled up with disolved CO2 so will not take any more from the air until some of the dissolved CO2 is taken out by forming calcite.
