is it possible to overwinter strawberry plants in jars?
I had very good luck this summer growing strawberry plants in special terracotta jars. I had very good instructions in an article I cut from a gardening magazine years ago. However the article gave no instructions on how to winter the plants over. Any insight on this dilemma would be appreciated. Unless you have very large containers, I would guess your strawberry jar is full of roots and the nutrients in the soil will not be able to support the strawberries for another year. I would suggest removing the plants from the jar and repotting them into 6″ pots and sinking them into the garden. Don’t plant them in the ground in the terra cotta pots, as they will absorb water, freeze and thaw, and have a short lifespan. Hose the terra cotta containers out and put them in a dry place for the winter. Next spring replant the strawberries into the jar – with new soil.
