IS it possible to know what is inside the earth?
Most definitely! There are 2 possible scales of knowledge: the large picture of our planet, and the local picture The large picture of Earth’s interior has been constructed from geophysical data, mainly using earthquake waves. These have defined the major density layers within the planet, and provided data which has allowed for the confident prediction of the composition of those layers. This is enhanced by studies of erupted materials (lavas), which provide data on the rocks in the upper mantle and lower crust, and studies on meteorites, which were one of the main components in the Earth’s formation.. Magnetic survey data also provides data on the structure and components of the Earth, to depths of up to 5 km, and seismic survey data can penetrate to about three times that depth. Drill holes are the most common way of determining the local composition of the earth, but these rarely go past a few hundred metres, or very rarely to 4 kilometres. The links below will help.
