The higher the carat number, the softer the gold. It is possible to have an allergic reaction because 18ct gold will have other metals,for example nickel, mixed with it to make it stronger and harder. Try taking your ring off from time to time when washing your hands, when you moisturise your hands, pay particular attention to your ring finger. It maybe the cold, or as one answerer suggested, eczema, but if it worsens, speak to your doctor.
