Is it possible to have a successful career as a freelance game designer in todays game industry?
Designers have the hardest route of all. If you can claim a skill in Programming, Art, Quality Assurance, Music, or Writing then it is a lot easier to get work. “Freelance designer” is pretty hard because often even the most unskilled CEO will often believe he can design a game. All he needs is somebody to do the grunt work. I even recommend that students not apply to be a designer for big corporation because a lot of people who think they can design – can’t. It’s a big risk for a company to allow people who have not been through the process to try a get a game designed and built. Now flip that around. Design your own game and hire the skills you need to get it finished. This is often the best route for somebody who wants to exclusively be a designer.
