You can straighten your hair, but if it’s thick you might need to have it thinned. If you can’t afford a hairdresser to do it, you can buy thinning scissors at pharmacys or hair and beauty suppliers. After you have it thinned, wash it and condition it and even apply a leave in conditioner afterwards on towel dryed hair. You may need to blow dry it first or you could try wet to straight straighteners for this style. These are straighteners that dry and straighten hair all at once very flat, and they lock in the moisture (unlike old ones of this type that used to damage hair) You can use a heat protection spray if you are concerned about heat damage.
