Is it possible to get a Fasting Blood Sugar false positive result?

False positive results may be seen with any medical test although they are uncommon. I have twice challenged the reference laboratory that I was using. I suspected errors in certain specific laboratory tests. In both occasions the laboratory found that indeed there were errors being made. Having said that it is never acceptable to base the diagnosis of diabetes upon a single reading. Every reading must be repeated for accuracy and reproducibility. Sometimes additional testing is done such as the glycated hemoglobin A1C. The A1C provides the 90 day mean (average) glucose as opposed to the isolated reading of a fasting glucose. An isolated reading may not provide sufficient information to judge the severity of the disease process. The physician must also ask and answer the question as to whether or not there is a reason other than diabetes causing the elevated gluocse reading if such a reading is confirmed. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you the very best of
