Is It Possible To Find Intact WW2 Weapons In The French Countryside?
French and Belgium farmers frequently find artillery from both WWI and WW2 when they are churning up the soil, or after particularly heavy floods. A way to get it back across would be by travelling by car and taking the Ferry over. The chances of you finding an intact rifle or machine gun are very low though.
You have a greater chance of finding buried WW1 weapons than WW2 weapons. WW1 weapons were buried when trenches collapsed or artillery barrages blew them in. In WW2, the weapons tended to stay above ground and could be found and collected more easily. WW2 resistance supplies which weren’t used were probably sold on the black market or shipped to the fighting in Algeria. So, what buried weapons might be found? Cellars of old buildings not since rebuilt? Perhaps weapons caches were buried during the Battle of the Bulge, but I doubt it. The Nazis reputedly buried weapons and Nazi gold in places like Lake Constance at war’s end. But if you want an M-1, ask an historic arms dealer.
