Is it possible to extrapolate norfloxacin sensitivity from ciprofloxacin for Gram-negative organisms in urine samples?

A. Yes, it is possible to extrapolate norfloxacin sensitivity from ciprofloxacin but not the other way round. In the CDS, we use ciprofloxacin 2.5 μg discs for systemic infections and norfloxacin 10 μg discs for urinary tract infections. Generally, there is good correlation between the two quinolones; the MIC of norfloxacin is, in most cases, four fold that of ciprofloxacin. However in some isolates, the MIC of norfloxacin was found to be only two fold that of ciprofloxacin. In this situation, the organism may show susceptibility to norfloxacin but resistance to ciprofloxacin.
