Is it possible to do a part-time PhD or MPhil degree?

Technically it is possible. It may seem an attractive option because the annual fees are much less; currently the overseas full time Band 2 fee is £10,340, whereas for part time registration it is £5,170 (ie 50%). The PhD regulations allow two varieties of part-time registration: (1) as a candidate whose minimum period of advanced study and research shall be not less than four years, of which not less than one year shall be spent in full-time study in the University, in periods of at least three months duration; and (2) as a candidate whose minimum period of advanced study and research shall be not less than six years of part-time study. If you are able to spend at least one year here at Newcastle (in 3 month spells over 4 years), then you will be able to do a PhD in 4 years, otherwise it will take you 6. While the financial benefits of part-time registration may seem obvious, it must be emphasised that this is a very difficult and challenging route to getting a PhD or MPhil degree. Pa
