Is it possible to create a bright white star shape with a diffraction grating?
Answer Hi Brian, I am not sure what you mean by using a diffraction grating to create a star. It is theoretically possible to build up some diffraction patterns that will yield a star shape, but the task is not a simple one either to design or build, requiring Fourier transforms (diffraction patterns can be defined in Fourier space). Further, it would only be visible from close range without something like a searchlight behind the grating, and it would need a screen for projection. I’m not sure of any specific literature that might help, but a Google search should get you started. Look for ‘fourier transform’ in addition to ‘diffraction pattern’ and ‘double-slit diffraction’. For your light source, check out the high powered LEDs now on the market. LSDiodes.com has the THC3 3-watt LEDs in several colors, including white. Be sure to read through the caution statements about power use, and if you aren’t familiar with circuit design, check out the LED tutorial and calculator on their site
