Is it possible to change the search configuration settings to accept searches with only 3 letters in v.1.4?

I undertook a couple of changes under “$wgDBminWordLen” and “$wgDBmysql4″(DefaultSettings.php) but unfortunately without any success. Of course I was not sure whether this was the right place to tweak these settings. I also wanted to express my thankfullness since you already helped me out before.
