Is it possible to cash foreign bank cheques in Russia?
A man came to editorial office of Finance., asking for an advice. He was the owner of the Bank of New Yorks cheque for $200 and wanted to have it in cash. He soon found out that not all (even large) banks in Russia provided services like that. According to a fast survey of several largest credit institutions, Sberbank, Rosbank, MDM, Promsyazbank none of those were working with personal cheques issued to a private individual, the same answer was obtained in Alpha-Banks call center. The situation is easily explained. The most frequent explanation here is that there is very low demand for services like that. Those are generally one-shot operations, which is why many banks dont even publish tariffs for those services on their websites. And if they do provide the service, it is possible to find information on fees only through their call-centers (which doesnt guarantee that an operator indeed possess reliable information in that respect).
