You must buy a Eurail pass in the US. They are valid for various time lengths. Take your longer weekend trips at the end when it is activated rather than at the beginning of the program. You do not need a pass at the beginning of the semester. It is cheaper to buy point-to-point tickets to the closer Italian towns. An Italian Kilometric pass is also a great way to travel. It is possible to have someone purchase a Eurail for you while you are over in Italy, and send it to you (via Fed-Ex, for reliability and speed 3-5 working days), but be sure to allow enough time for delivery.
