It’s almost certainly not the case that a belief in Genesis as literal history is compatible with evolution. If the book says “day” then that’s exactly what it means. If the book says that God created all living things as we find them today in one day, then that’s exactly what it means. There is no room in this interpretation for the billion-year history of life on Earth, the gradual evolution of species from a common ancestor. Note that evolutionary theory makes no claims about either the origin of life itself (abiogenesis) or how we ought to live our lives (ethics), and it is in these two domains that I think religion seeks a niche. In the abstract, it’s entirely reasonable to claim that the Genesis account is a myth and that science has uncovered what may approximate “the truth” about how God created life. “Answers in Genesis” style creationism is not compatible with evolution.
