Getting a global figure for something like the number of prostitutes or sex workers is beset with difficulties. You obviously have to start by getting figures for each country. There are probably three main techniques of calculating such numbers at a national level: censuses (where all sex workers are counted in a given country); multiplier techniques (where figures are extrapolated based on specific studies or data from a limited number of locations); or expert opinion.
