The legend of Vampires came from false deaths and to explain high mortality rates in infants and children. People found that when they looked in the grave of some one who had died earlier their nails appeared longer as well as there was blood dripping out of their mouths. They also saw that when people were laid to rest some of them didn’t stay in the ground. Some people were buried alive. Once the person came out of their comatose state they fought their way back to the surface, causing everyone to think they were the undead, and earning themselves a stake through the heart. It wasn’t till later that doctors found out about different illnesses that caused people to appear dead and that caused the body to bloat and cause blood to drip from the mouth. They also found out that as the body decomposed the skin pulled away from the nail causing them to look longer.
