Is it possible for European producers to co-produce with Japanese companies?
It is possible but is still difficult. There have been several co-productions which failed during the ’80 like Inspector Gadget, Ulysses 31, The Mysterious Cities of Gold. The Japanese audience did not respond to these kinds of products. There is no public subsidies from the Government, and then there are no advantages for the European co-producers to try to finance their series in Japan. We must add that generally there is a certain degree of unpopularity of the Western animation series. Even Disney production has struggled to succeed in the country. There is nevertheless a necessity to promote coproductions. There is a pessimistic forecast for the market as the birth rate in Japan is very low. The Manga market is diminishing. We need to expand the overseas market because of the reduction of the internal market.
