Is it possible for an American born in the States to obtain dual-citizenship in the Netherlands?

The Netherlands allows dual citizenship, but if you live outside the Netherlands for over 10 years, you lose Dutch nationality. You’d have to live there for 5 years even to qualify to be naturalised in the first place. What would be far more practical in your case is to look towards acquiring British citizenship. If you have that, then as a citizen of an EU country you have the right to live and work in any other country of the EU, including the Netherlands. I looked into this with my boyfriend (who is German) – we concluded that even though he is settled in the UK, there really is no point whatsoever in him becoming British. Having lived here for over 4 years without recourse to social security, the only thing he cannot do that a British citizen can is vote in Parliamentary elections.
