You could but it wouldn’t give your most delicate goldfish a good chance for a long, healthy life. Think of it this way: Single tail goldfish such as commons, comets and shubunkin are the goldfish equivalent of super athletes. These fish are exceptionally strong swimmers and their sleek body type makes them very fast. These fish also get to be quite long (some over a foot in length) This is why larger tanks are necessary and ponds are recommended. Fancy goldfish with double tails have a more rounded body type and don’t swim nearly as well the super athletic single tails. Kept with single tails, the fancies tend to hide, may not get enough to eat and are often stressed by the exceptionally fast single tails whizzing by them.
