Is it okay to have other apps running while GameSpy is pinging the servers?
It may influence your ping times because GameSpy will not get the CPU as often. The pings may not be as influenced as much, but the times of the UDP queries will definitely be compromised, throwing off your results. You definitely shouldn’t issue a ping from the command line while GameSpy is pinging. • Does GameSpy reduce my lag? No. GameSpy simply helps you find the most playable server you can get with your current connection onto the internet. It doesn’t do anything to your system to improve performance. Also we are NOT a online game service, like TEN, Mplayer, etc, where they have their own dedicated lines, and servers. GameSpy, and the servers listed are all public servers ran by people who simply want to have a public server to be used by everyone and anyone.
