Is it okay to end a sentence with a preposition?
It depends on who you ask. Strictly speaking, no, but there are certain phrases that don’t make sense if you don’t end the sentence in a preposition. For example, there is a famous Winston Churchill quote (I think this is right, but maybe someone can correct me, if not), “The rule which forbids ending a sentence with a preposition is the kind of nonsense up with which I will not put.” That was in response to an opposition politician who criticized Churchill for ending a sentence in a preposition. Churchill shows that the rule is silly. However, in my opinion, Churchill was a pompous jerk and there are a number of ways to reword that sentence so that it makes sense, but still do not end with a preposition. In many cases, instead of admitting he was wrong, Churchill would, and quite successfully, do his best to make the other person look stupid; using brilliant pieces of sophistry. I think people who argue it is ok to end a sentence with a preposition are just being lazy.
