Is it OK to use sand blasting sand in a horse riding arena?
Sand used for sandblasting is just sand of different grits, usually it’s #60, and you can purchase it at most construction supply places. But if it’s been used for something that might have fine particles of whatever it was used for, I’d be careful about what’s in it as it could contain toxins. But be aware that most sandblasting is now done with things other than sand (because of the dangers of silicosis), from walnut shells to steel balls. So you need to check if it really is sand or some other organic material. If you are going to be using sand for your arena, be sure not to use too much. You can always add more as you need to, but 2-3 inches is plenty at first. It’s really hard on a horse’s tendons, especially young horses. Deep sand is also a bear to keep moist enough to avoid slipping. What is ideal is mixing it with some other material.
