Is it OK to raise a turtle in a home aquarium?

Superstitions aside, it is alright to raise a turtle in a home aquarium provided you have adequate facilities. Generally, a good rule of thumb to go by is at least twenty gallons of water per turtle and somewhere for them to bask outside of the water. You should get more information on specific needs of the species of turtle you are considering keeping (i.e. diet, lifespan, habits and habitat) before you make the decision to keep one. If the turtle is wild-caught, you should also make sure that you are allowed to keep the turtle based on the laws where you live (these can be accessed through the dept. of fish and wildlife).
