Is it ok to mix breast milk with formula?
Here’s the thing about mixing them – if you give your baby a bottle of breast milk and he doesn’t finish it, you can offer that bottle up to two more times at later feedings. If you offer him formula and he doesn’t finish it, you need to throw it away (due to the baby’s saliva getting in the bottle and starting to break it down – it will give him a tummyache. The antibodies in breastmilk prevent such spoilage.) So if you mix them and he doesn’t finish it, you’re throwing away breastmilk, which is a real waste, since it’s a lot of work to pump it out. Also, why not breastfeed in the night? If your baby’s crib is next to your bed, grab him and bring him in bed with you and rest while he’s nursing. Actually less work than getting up to get the formula.
