Is it OK to exceed an assigned word count?
As noted in the two items above, an instructor sets the word count for an essay based on how complicated the topic is. If your essay exceeds the assigned word count, it could be that your points need to be simplified. More is not always better; too many words, too many examples, or too much explanation in an essay may cause your readers to lose interest or be unable to follow your train of thought. You do not need to include every detail about a particular point; include only the most significant details that prove and flesh out your support points. Be sure your points, evidence, and explanations are presented clearly and simply. If your readers cannot follow your ideas, your essay is not a success.
