Is it OK to drink diet soda while breastfeeding?
Diet sodas containing Nutrasweet are generally considered safe to drink while breastfeeding, unless your baby has been diagnosed with a fairly rare condition called phenylketonuria. Drinks containing saccharin are considered OK in moderation, as the levels of the saccharin can build up in your milk. Some babies will have problems if mom is consuming large quantities of caffeine, which is also present in most sodas. (Read the label!) Perhaps a bigger concern here is not whether it is safe, but whether it isnutritionally sound. There are certainly more nutritious drinks than sodas – diet or otherwise! Even plain water is an excellent choice for the breastfeeding mother. You will make good breast milk, even if your diet iscompromised, but you’ll feel better if you eat well. The key is moderation. Don’t go overboard on any one food item!
