Is it ok for horses with strangles to be outside in winter weather?

If they are used to being out, and have a full winter coat, they will probably do better outside than than in. Inside air tends to be dusty and harbor mold spores and mildew, and fumes from urine decomposition can be a problem in barns. So unless the horses are not used to the cold, they will be fine as long as they can get behind something like a windbreak to get out of the wind. The outside air is actually better for them than inside air. Ideally, they should have a covered shelter to go into if they choose to, but they should at least have a windbreak. If there is no shelter whatsoever, it would be best to find them a place to go that provides it while they recover. I’ve seen horses go through strangles and remain outside in weather that was well below 0 degrees F and recover without complications.
