I don’t know the color ratings in Karate, but I assume green belt is lower than black belt. If green is less than half-way (eg, not 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th kyu) to 1st dan, and the instructor is an adult with a few years into 1st dan, then I see no problem with this at all. It’s when you get into dan testing that you need to be sure that the tester is well ahead (2 ranks or more) than the testee. Also, you didn’t indicate how old your son is, and while it shouldn’t make a difference, the quality of techniques expected of a child is typically less than that of an adult; and in all honesty, the emotional qualities of that child is just easily graded by an adult of any rank – kyu or dan. If your son is an adult or older teen, then I would insist on an adult black belt with a few years into 1st dan (or higher).
