Is It Offensive To Say “Merry Christmas” Opposed to Saying “Happy Holidays”?
Christmas is a Christian holiday, (falsely dated, as Jesus was actually born much earlier in the year) and saying “Merry Christmas” may *seem* to many a presumption of the receiver of the greeting’s coinciding celebration thereof. Anyone taking offense at being greeted with “Merry Christmas” is, in my opinion, being over-sensitive and taking upon themselves that presumption. I am a rabid anti-theist, and it no longer bothers me in the least when someone who observes this holiday greets me thus. It is how *they* feel, not an invitation to join them in that feeling. It is, at least, a pleasant greeting. They don’t mean to harm you when they say it, nor are they necessarily ‘preaching’ at you. They are simply using thier celebration to be kind, and allowing their observance to be a cause for happy association.
