Is it O.K. to administer MMR to a two-day postpartum woman who is not immune to rubella if her infant is in intensive care?
Yes. Although a woman can excrete rubella vaccine virus in breast milk and transmit the virus to her infant, the infection remains asymptomatic and breast feeding is not a contraindication to vaccination. Otherwise, persons who receive MMR vaccine do not transmit measles, rubella, or mumps vaccine viruses, ACIP MMR Recommendations (see page 33).
