Is it normal to cough after rigorous cycling?

Yes, this happens to me during and after cycling or any other vigorous, aerobic activity. When you work hard for an extended period, you are taking in more air. This irritates the windpipe in and of itself. You may also increase sinus drainage, which can aggravate the cough, and it’s compounded even more by allergies, which I have through most of the warmer months. Staying hydrated on the bike and off will help with the cough, as it keeps the mucus thin and less irritating. A cup of tea or other soothing beverage afterwards will also help, although you want to avoid caffeine, as it’s a diuretic. Sources: 28 years of riding.
