Is it normal for a leopard gecko to go off food for a while?
Adults can go 3 months or more without eating and have minimal weight loss if they are “cooled down” so their metabolism is basically nothing (60 F). Many breeders do this in fact, however this practice is becomming less popular because leopard geckos will readily breed without having to do this. Adult Leopard Geckos’ diets are typically unique to every gecko, some will eat any thing at any time, while others may demonstrate fasting periods, and yet others might accept food only every other week. Once a leopard Gecko has developed a rather nice, fat tail, it doesn’t take a ton of crickets to keep it nice and fat. Ironically, babies and juveniles eat WAY more and more often than adults, because they require so much energy and nutrients to grow…..once the growing is halted by adulthood, the food demand declines while the weight is retained.
