Is it necessary to put antibiotic ointment into babys eyes when delivered?
It is required by law in most states within the United States to administer antibiotic ointment to the eyes of newborn babies. It is used to prevent an eye infection from gonorrhea or chlamydia transmitted from the mother. The antibiotic is either erythromycin or tetracycline ointment which are designed not to be irritating to the baby’s eyes.
