Is it necessary to assess all published learning outcomes?
Yes. The intent of this initiative is to focus on, and continually enhance student learning within an educational program. Therefore, students’ performance relative to each expected learning outcome should be measured on a regular and systematic basis. Without the aid of direct or indirect measures of student learning, it is impossible to determine if specific expected learning outcomes are achieved. (See Attachment 6, “Assessing Programs” and related examples.) Keep in mind, however, learning outcomes should not be “watered down” to make them more assessable. Instead, we are being encouraged to articulate our deepest convictions regarding what’s most important for students to learn, even if what is required to fully achieve these outcomes lies outside the purview of a degree program, and even if our assessment data for some outcomes is necessarily limited (see FAQ #14).
